FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY FAQS
1. When is the best time of year for family photos in Michigan?
We photograph families year-round, but fall, summer and spring are the most popular. Golden leaves or blooming trees and flowers make for great backdrops. If you're after rich colors and layered outfits, book late September through mid-October. For breezy, green portraits, May and June are ideal. Bonus tip: Overcast days work better than you think—no squinting and even light.
2. What should we wear for our family session?
Stick coordinated colors (not matching colors) make for the best photos. Some photographers will tell you to stick to earth tones or subtle colors, but if you live your life surrounded by color that can be a great way to make your photos personal to you. Think about texture and generally avoid logos. Do you really want to see that giant advertisement in your family photos for the next 30 years? Short version: dress like you're headed to brunch or church.
3. Can you help us choose a location?
Absolutely. We've photographed families all over Metro Detroit—from Rochester or Troy parks to downtown Detroit or private backyards. We'll recommend spots based on your vibe: natural and woodsy, urban and modern, or something in between.
4. How long does a session take?
Most sessions are 30 or 60 minutes. 30 minute sessions are great for toddlers with limited patience, while a full hour gives us time to explore, play, and get that one priceless image of everyone looking the same direction at the same time.
5. What if my kids don't cooperate?
They probably won't… for at least part of it. And that’s okay. We don’t expect perfection—we expect real life. We’ll do some fun things, get on their level, and pivot when needed. Some of our favorite photos come from the chaos. You’ll walk away with honest, joyful images, tantrums and all.
6. What happens if the weather is bad?
Welcome to Michigan. If it’s raining, snowing, or looking rough, we’ll reschedule. We build in flexibility to make sure you get the light and mood you're hoping for. Cloudy? We’re still good to go. Soft skies make for beautiful skin tones.
7. How much does it cost?
A 30-minute session is $150, and a full hour is $300. This includes edited digital images and a private gallery for download. No hidden fees, no forced print purchases. Just honest pricing for photos you'll actually want to frame.
8. When will we get our photos back?
Within 30 days, but probably sooner. We hand-edit each image to make sure it’s polished but still real. You'll get a link to a gallery where you can download, share, and order prints if you'd like.
9. Can we include grandparents, cousins, or our dog?
Yes to all of it. We love extended family shoots—just let us know when you book so we can plan accordingly. Also keep in mind that the more people there are the less time we have for each individual. Don’t surprise us at the session with additional people. We are happy to do shoots with pets, but we want to know ahead of time. Also, if you are bringing a pet make sure to bring someone who can take control of the pet when we get photos of you without the pet involved. We love pets, but our hands will be full so we can’t wrangle the pet and take photos.
10. How do we book a session?
Easy. Click here to schedule a call or fill out our contact form. We’ll walk you through timing, locations, and get your session on the calendar.
